 What is Cladding?

So, what actually is cladding? Cladding, by definition, is a layer of material that's placed on a built structure (building or house) or on any surface.

Cladding is what you see when looking at a building from the outside. Cladding forms part of the architecture of a building not only in terms of aesthetics, but also structure because cladding doesn't support any of the load boarding of a structure.

Cladding protects a building or structure from the elements by shielding a building envelope from rain, snow, sleet, wind and the sun's rays.

What types of cladding should I use for my facade or exterior?

Many people have a difficult time choosing their preferred choice of material or style of facade because it's such a niche product and only an expert opinion will often make the best choice.

Some of the most common types of cladding used on commercial and residential buildings include:

Natural Stone Siding

Natural Stone Siding

This is often composed of either a geometric or worked stone blocks - these can provide your building architecture with a more rustic and natural exterior design. This siding style is often best for a rustic, Latin or country-style facade.

Quarry Stone Siding

This type of siding is composed of natural stone. This type of siding is often used to design and construct unique stone columns.

Spanish Tile Siding

Tile Siding

Though these types of siding are not as common due to their fragility, porcelain and ceramic tiles are sometimes used to create some modern facade designs. These materials are sometimes used to create contemporary and colonial facade designs. Tile, talaveras and losetas have been a very important part of Mexican facade architecture.

Steel Cladding

Steel Siding

Often referred to as "steel cladding", this siding material is becoming more popular due to the boom is industrial facade designs. Steel siding can come in a matte or a chrome finish, providing whatever look an architect or designer is looking for.

Steel siding can also come in many various colors such as: Red, Black or Yellow. These more pronounced color choices are often paired to contract other building features such as windows and other siding materials such as stone and other smooth cladding types.

Polished Cement Finish

Microment Siding

Microment (polished cement) is a type of siding material than can take any form due to it's unique structural properties. Microment is a type of polished concrete that dries very quickly, allowing you the ability to create custom facade designs. Microment is often used in contemporary and urban design due it's relatable look and feel to these design looks.

Microment is a popular choice for residential or commercial properties and is often placed in toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and other environments that involve heavy-duty usage such as: offices, hotels and other hospitality venues. Microment is great for nearly every property type due to it's resistance to the growth and accumulation of fungi's, limescale and/ or various types of molds.

Brick Siding

Brick Siding

Although this type of siding was often used just for structural purposes, brick siding is now becoming more and more popular as designers and architects are seeking a more rustic look. Many different types of bricks can be used and some designers opt to even use fake brick cladding on top of a wall envelope to achieve a rustic look while saving money on materials and labor.

Wood Siding Half House

Wood Siding

Wood facades are also becoming more popular as a rustic facade style is becoming more in-style. Wood facades can stand out amongst other designs and are often incorporated with other design styles to help accentuate building features such as: doors, balconies and lattices.

Wood cladding can come in many various forms and is usually avoided due to the extremely high costs but can provide a premium-rustic style for your home or commercial building.

Clay Brick Siding

This is one of the most commonly used types of siding materials. This type of cladding helps to reinforce and accentuate the industrial and rustic facade styles and is ideal for interior decoration in lofts and apartments to add a youthful, industrial chic touch.
